Nathan F. Garrett

Nathan F. Garrett joins the law firm of Graves Bartle Marcus & Garrett, LLC after a highly distinguished career in both state and federal law enforcement. Prior to joining Graves Bartle Marcus & Garrett, LLC, Nathan was a Supervisory Assistant United States Attorney, serving as the Chief Prosecutor of the National Security and Terrorism Section in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri. In this capacity, Nathan was responsible for coordinating and managing complex intelligence and criminal investigations and prosecuting the District’s national security cases, which included terrorism financing and support, money laundering, fraud, and violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (security controls related to import/export activity, designated states and nationals, and Presidential Executive Orders).

From 2002 through 2005, Nathan served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, assigned to the Terrorism and Cybercrime Section. While working out of the United States Attorney’s Office in Dallas, Nathan coordinated, investigated and prosecuted international terrorism financing and support cases, in addition to computer and intellectual property related offenses and fraud schemes.

Nathan also served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney from 2000 through 2002 on special detail to the United States Attorney’s Office in Dallas, Texas while serving as a Special Agent for the FBI. In this capacity, Nathan was responsible for transitioning traditional counterterrorism intelligence investigations into criminal prosecutions. Nathan was assigned at the request of the Chief of the Terrorism and Violent Crimes Section of the Department of Justice in Washington D.C. to the post-9/11 created Terrorism Financing Task Force in Washington D.C. This assignment involved weekly travel to Washington D.C. in the months following 9/11 to assist the Department of Justice in identifying and coordinating terrorism financing and support investigations around the United States. Nathan served as a Special Agent in the FBI from 1998 through 2002, and was assigned to the Bureau’s International Terrorism Squad and the Violent Crime and Major Offender Squad in Dallas, Texas.

Nathan’s work in the national security arena led to extensive coordination and interaction with all levels of government within the United States and abroad. Nathan developed close working relationships not only with domestic officials, but also with numerous foreign governments and United States officials serving overseas.

Prior to Nathan’s work in the FBI and Department of Justice, he served as a Missouri State Trooper. Nathan is a graduate of the 73rd Missouri State Highway Patrol recruit class, and the first attorney to attend and graduate from the Missouri Highway Patrol Academy. He was appointed by the Thirty-seventh Judicial Circuit as a Special Prosecutor on two murder cases prosecuted in Howell County, Missouri while commissioned as a State Trooper.

Nathan’s experience in state law enforcement also included a position as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Howell County, Missouri, where he handled a variety of felony investigations and trials.

Nathan’s other achievements and honors include: Member of the Dallas Committee on Foreign Relations; Certified FBI Legal Advisor; Selection to the FBI’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team; Multiple FBI investigative awards; Vice-Commander, 73rd Missouri State Highway Patrol Class; Recipient of numerous plaques/letters of appreciation and certificates of commendation; Elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

Nathan was born and raised in West Plains, Missouri. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in History and Philosophy from Cornell College located in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Nathan received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Tulsa, School of Law. Nathan lives in Kansas City, Missouri with his wife and two children.
